Biodiversity underpins all life on earth. It should endure in all ecosystems and pervade all of human society. Yet biodiversity, the product of 3.8 billion years of evolution, is under siege worldwide!
Marin County, perched on the edge of the continent between ocean and bay, with its complex geology, topography, soils, and vegetation, lies at the center of a world-recognized “hotspot” for biodiversity. The traditional approach is to fully protect such resources on lands set aside for just that purpose, but that is not enough to preserve the earth’s biodiversity. MCL believes that for natural systems and human communities to survive and thrive, the protection of biodiversity must be an overarching goal; – every decision, no matter how complex, must be viewed through that lens.
