Virtual Power Plants
Matt Golden, CEO of Recurve, will discuss virtual power plants, which RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute) says “….may be our most important and most overlooked domestic energy resource”. Matt will focus on demand flexibility as a grid resource—managing use of devices, including air conditioners, EV chargers, electric water heaters, and dryers. The goal is to cut electricity use when demand is high, and shift use to parts of the day when electricity is much cleaner and cheaper. Recurve’s platform uses meter data and analytics to accurately calculate hourly electricity savings and payments that reward customers for cutting their demand.
Recently, MCE Clean Energy partnered with Recurve to demonstrate that virtual power plants using demand flexibility has huge potential to ensure sufficient power supply, lower customer costs, and reduce greenhouse gases. MCE’s and Recurve’s Peak FLEXmarket pilot became the basis for a California-wide, $150 million program funded by the California Public Utilities Commission.
Featured Speaker: Matt Golden is Founder and CEO at Recurve, a Sausalito-based firm. Recurve’s well-vetted methods estimate how much to pay for purposeful demand reduction, including during periods of high grid stress.
A Mill Valley resident, Matt is a national leader in the energy efficiency industry and has served on a number of national and state nonprofit boards. Matt has testified before Congress, spoke at COP21, and has been featured in numerous articles and publications. Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in foreign relations from Georgetown University and is a recovering licensed California contractor.
