DESCRIPTION:Marin Conservation League\nClimate Action Working Group Meeting\nWednesday 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\nZoom Meeting \nRegister: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwoduysrDMsGt16JMYC3r6_mA1R0EYqLgKn \n \nAugust 19: Expanding renewable energy possibilities:  Latest developments in geothermal energy systems \nJoin MCL’s Climate Action Working Group meeting to hear about the latest developments in geothermal energy systems that can provide round-the-clock renewable energy that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  Even though the rapid growth of solar plus batteries\, along with wind\, has lessened California’ natural gas use and GHG emissions\, “clean\, firm” renewable energy still is needed to replace gas during some key periods\, either daily or seasonally. \nWhile conventional geothermal requires subsurface heat\, fluids\, and permeable rock together in one place to generate electricity\, newer geothermal systems require the subsurface heat and add the other components.  Woody Hastings from The Climate Center will discuss conventional\, enhanced\, closed loop and superhot rock geothermal systems\, including the potential\, challenges and opportunities for each.  He also will discuss the environmental impact of each type\, beyond lowering greenhouse gas emissions. \nCB Hall from MCE will describe the large conventional geothermal contract that MCE will be taking over in mid-2027 and discuss geothermal benefits and challenges. \nAlso at this meeting:  an update of MCL’s recent advocacy with MCE\, the latest Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s rules on heat pump water and space heaters\, and more. \nSpeakers: \nWoody Hastings is an energy and environmental policy analyst\, strategic planner\, and community organizer at The Climate Center\, with over thirty years of experience in the non-profit\, governmental\, and private sectors. He has given a series of talks on various types of geothermal energy systems.  Woody received his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University with an emphasis on sustainability and social justice. He is also a Fellow of the Leadership Institute for Just and Resilient Communities. \nCB Hall is Director of Power Resources at MCE.  He evaluates long-term offers\, procures short-term supply and helps manage MCE’s market operations. CB has 20+ years of energy and finance experience and has worked for the California ISO\, PG&E\, Sonoma Clean Power\, and Morgan Stanley. DESCRIPTION:Marin Conservation League\nParks and Open Space Committee\n2:30–4:30 pm\nIn-person/Zoom hybrid\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pcOmgrD4vG9XtnkUk-dxDuEZFSvAuGyhD\n \nMapping the Endangered Myrtle’s Silverspot Butterfly Host Plant at Point Reyes National Seashore\nTanya Baxter\, Principal at Baxter Botanical\, and Cristobal Castaneda\, Volunteer Manager for Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA)\, will present on their work to map the western dog violet (Viola adunca) at Point Reyes. \n \nThis diminutive plant of the coastal prairie is host to the endangered Myrtle’s silverspot butterfly (Speyeria zerene ssp. myrtleae). Mapping this easily overlooked plant is helping scientists and land managers understand the violet’s range and preferred conditions\, which is critical for protecting the butterfly and its grassland habitat. \nTo accomplish this large mapping project\, Cristobal engaged community scientists this past spring. SUMMARY:Old Saint Hilary’s Preserve Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:Old Saint Hilary’s Preserve Guided Walk\n \nSaturday\, March 28\, 2026 – 9:00AM-Noon \nJoin MCL on a guided\, moderate one-mile walk through open grasslands and early wildflowers at the newest addition to the Old St. Hilary’s Open Space Preserve. Acquired in 2024\, these 110 acres complete the preserve and offer a spectacular new landscape to explore. \nWe’ll be joined by MCL member Kurt Rademacher\, an experienced naturalist who leads walks throughout Marin and Sonoma counties\, sharing insights into the site’s biological resources. Jerry Riessen of Tiburon Open Space will also guide us\, drawing on more than 30 years of grassroots work to acquire and protect these lands. MCL has been proud to partner in these efforts\, helping secure this landscape for public access in perpetuity. \nThe walk follows a one-mile loop with sweeping views of the San Francisco skyline\, the Golden Gate\, Angel Island\, the Marin Headlands\, and San Pablo\, San Francisco\, and Richardson Bays. Along the way\, we’ll encounter a variety of birds\, grasses\, and seasonal wildflowers. \nSpecific parking and access instructions will be provided upon registration. Please note that we cannot accommodate late arrivals or walk-ups. \nThere are no restrooms or facilities on site. Please bring water.
