Housing and Environmental Advocates Agree on Housing Policy Recommendations

A group of advocates who often have differed in the past on the issue of affordable housing have reached accord.  Representatives from Marin Conservation League (MCL), League of Women Voters (LWV), Sierra Club, and Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative (MEHC) met as “The Square Table Group” in 2009 to develop a set of Recommended Housing Policies for consideration by the County and the 11 cities and towns as they update their Housing Elements.   The recommendations represent a successful attempt to find sufficient points of agreement within the positions of each organization to frame a coherent set of recommendations.  The Housing Section of the document “Community Marin,” which MCL and Sierra Club drafted with other environmental organizations, provides the basic framework, modified to incorporate positions of the LWV and the MEHC.  The Recommendations were presented to the County Planning Commission at its October 12, 2009 meeting.

Ecumenical Association for Housing's project, Drake's Way, 24 new affordable homes, was completed in late 2009. The project exemplifies all of the key environmental practices that MCL encourages:  A “Smart Growth” infill location near transportation, employment, and services; and LEED-certified sustainable materials and maintenance, including solar photovoltaic panels..
